Excerpt from Dahlias and Gladioli, 1930 IF bulbs are received before IT IS convenient TO plant them, place -1n a shallow box bf moist soil until time to plant outdoors. If roots become too dry it may kill the eyes. Handle roots care fully, if the necks are broken or crowns injured it may ruin the tuber. Dahlias will grow in any good garden soil. An open, sunny location is best. They are usually planted from May 1 to June 10. The soil should be thoroughly pulverized to a considerable depth. BE sure and lay the tuber flat, and plant about six inches deep and three or four feet apart. About one half pint of bone meal and a pint of sheep manure or some well-rotted manure may be mixed with the soil for each dahlia.
