Amazon / Forgotten Books: Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Classic Reprint (Langlois Floral Garden) Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Classic Reprint (Langlois Floral Garden)

Excerpt from Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Culture: Dahlias will thrive in any soil that will produce a good crop of potatoes. They grow best in a sunny location. The soil should be spaded deep. Do not use fertilizer at planting time. The tubers should be set three feet apart each way. Dig a hole six inches deep and lay the tuber flat in the bottom, eye si-de up. Drive a stout stake near the eye at time of planting. Fill the hole about half full of soil. This practice of pinching out the top and the buds makes a dwarfer and bushier plant with large flowers on long stems suitable for cutting and exhibition. Keep the plants well watered during the dry sea son. After frost has killed the plant, cut the top off close to the ground, ...
