Amazon / Forgotten Books: Oregon Grown Gladiolus Bulbs, 1929 Classic Reprint (Bettendorfs Bettendorfs) Oregon Grown Gladiolus Bulbs, 1929 Classic Reprint (Bettendorfs Bettendorfs)

Excerpt from Oregon Grown Gladiolus Bulbs, 1929 The gladiolus is easy to grow. It will do well in almost any good garden soil, but a rich, sandy loam is best. Do not plant in the shade of trees or buildings. Especially stay away from trees and shrubs, whose tiny roots suck all the moisture out of the ground in a wide circle. May be planted from middle of April to latter-part of May. Plant in rows, in four or five-inch deep trenches, five to six inches between each bulb in the row and at least twenty inches between the rows. Excerpt from Modern Gladiolus Growing: 31 Years Experience; Also a List of More Than 250 of the Better Old and New Varieties, 1924 We like to commence our test of a variety with bulblets or young planting stock and do not consider the test complete until we grow it at least three years. Last season we had over 200 lots in our test plot, mostly small yearling bulbs, in most cases 25 bulbs of each variety. Amazon / Forgotten Books: Gladiolus, 1926 Classic Reprint (Indian Spring Farms) Gladiolus, 1926 Classic Reprint (Indian Spring Farms)

Excerpt from Gladiolus, 1926 Prepare the soil at least a foot deep. Plant in clusters, spacing the bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart, or in rows about 20 inches apart, to permit, of free and intensive cultivation, and 3 to 5 inches apart in the row. Cover the bulbs with three to six inches of well mellowed earth, depending on the character of the soil. Plant deeper in light soils, and shallower in heavier clay. The deeper planting insures more even moisture, and tends to support the heavy bloom spikes so that staking is not so necessary, while shallow planting is conducive to greater bulblet production.
