It does not make a litter by falling to pieces, and it is well adapted for the sick room, having no oppressive odor. Varieties differ in many ways besides in col ors. The earliest will bloom six weeks before the latest. Some varieties never produce large bulbs and others make bulbs four inches in diameter. Our Northern springs are so variable, that no definite period can be named. As a general rule, the proper time to commence sowing is about the middle of April, though a few sorts may be planted as soon as the ground can be got ready; and, for a succession, the sowing should be continued until June. In the Southern States, of course, January, February, or March will be the time to sow, as they correspond with April, May, and June of the North.
