Excerpt from Hints on Care and Culture of Roses, 1939 Any good garden soil is suitable for Roses. Most amateurs make the mistake of enriching the Rose-garden too much. Select a sunny situa tion away from trees and shrubbery. Spade deeply and make an opening large enough to receive the roots of the plant when spread out naturally. Place the plant in position and fill hole about two-thirds with top-soil. Water well, allow water to settle, and finish filling hole with soil. The plant should be set a little deeper than it grew in nursery. If any fertilizer is used, put it on top of the bed. After planting keep the Rose-bed well hoed but do not dig too deep - 2 inches is enough. During dry weather it is very important to water the Roses. Excerpt from Year Book of the Rose Society of Ontario, 1927 We hear complaints on every Side of the way modern science has complicated our existence, of speculations as to whether mans nervous system will ever become adjusted to such speed and noise. There IS nothing better for tired eyes and ears, nothing more soothing for jarred nerves than the making of a rose garden. It will help us to recover something of that tranquility of spirit we find so charming in the old writers; make us feel that Abraham Cowleys ambition was a wise one, when he wrote, back in the year 1667 -i never had any desire so strong, and so like to covetousness, as that one I have had always, that I might be master at last of a small house and a large garden and there dedi cate the remainder of my life to the culture of it and study of nature. And there (with no desire beyond my wall), whole and entire to lie. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
