Amazon / Forgotten Books: Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Classic Reprint (Langlois Floral Garden) Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Classic Reprint (Langlois Floral Garden)

Excerpt from Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Culture: Dahlias will thrive in any soil that will produce a good crop of potatoes. They grow best in a sunny location. The soil should be spaded deep. Do not use fertilizer at planting time. The tubers should be set three feet apart each way. Dig a hole six inches deep and lay the tuber flat in the bottom, eye si-de up. Drive a stout stake near the eye at time of planting. Fill the hole about half full of soil. When the plant has made two pair of leaves, pinch out the top above the second pair. Cutivate thoroughly, gradually filling in the hole. When buds appear, pinch out all but one on a stem and also the next pair or two of shoots below the bud. This practice of pinching out the top and the buds makes a dwarfer and bushier plant with large flowers on long stems suitable for cutting and exhibition. Keep the plants well watered during the dry sea son. After frost has killed the plant, cut the top off close to the ground, ...

Excerpt from Spooner s Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Selected Flower and Vegetable Seeds, Gladiolus, Lilies, and Other Summer-Flowering Bulbs, 1875 In novelties, we think it better to give them a trial ourselves before offering them in our Cata logue, as so many sent out by European houses prove anything but desirable acquisitions, being frequently old varieties under new names, with elaborate descriptions; at the same time, we have Sufficient in stock for those who may wish to see for themselves, and will supply them at the prices quoted in other Catalogues. It is not our endeavor to sell cheap seeds, but the choicest; and we believe the prices quoted can not fail to give satisfaction to our patrons, and those who are inclined to favor us with their orders, to which we guarantee our best and prompt attention. We feel confident that a trial of our seeds will prove their best recommendation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ...
