DICENTRA : The common name of this plant, bleeding heart, comes from the heart-shaped flowers which have a longer inner petal that extends below the heart. Pendulous flowers on slender stems grow from clumps of fernlike foliage in the spring. The flowering season is from early spring to mid summer . Fringed Bleeding Heart is a mound-shaped plant growing to about 18 inches with blue-green leaves of a very fine texture. The main bloom period occurs in early summer, but with good moisture and deadheading it will continue to bloom into the fall. This perennial prefers a partially shaded site and well-drained soil. Wet soils during the winter and dry soils during the summer lead to plant loss. The foliage of Fringed Bleeding Heart will not die back like that of old-fashioned bleeding heart.
