Rare Tasmanian Variegated Bears Breeches - Acanthus
The first variegated Acanthus! This gem, found in Tasmania, offers striking, bold leaves with white margins and mottling. It forms a large clump with 3 to 4 tall ornamental flower stalks of pink and cream in late summer. A. mollis is tolerant of most soils but thrives in deep, fertile, moist, and well-drained conditions. Usage An acanthus would stand out in a bed of ferns or hostas, providing contrast with its darker color, greater size, and complex texture. It would be a stately specimen in a courtyard garden. Some of the dignity that seems inherent in this plant might stem from its use in the ornamentation of classical Greek artwork and Corinthian columns! Probably because of its classical background, or perhaps because of the sculptural nature of the plant, it imposes an air of formality. Certainly it deserves a place of honor on the grounds of your palace! Features Bold, textured, large leaves; tall, imposing flower spike. ...

Gardens for a Beautiful America, 1895- 1935, written by Sam Watters and published in collaboration with the Library of Congress, presents for the first time 250 colored photographs of urban and suburban gardens taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston- photographer of presidents, celebrity authors, tastemakers, and estates of the County House Era. At the opening of the 20th century, as artist and progressive, Johnston was front and center in the movement to beautify America. Gilded Age industrialism had brought at new prosperity to life coast to coast, but at the price of once pristine forests, rivers, and blue skies, wrecked by continental railroad building and factory pollution in growing cities. As guardians of home and community, wealthy women rallied clubs and societies to green America through design and horticulture. To show all gardeners, rich and poor, what a garden should be, they turned to Frances Benjamin Johnston. Johnston s colored lantern slides have not been seen since the 19 ...
