Cypripedium acaule - Stemless Lady's Slipper

Pink Lady Slipper Orchids grow best in an acid soil, high in organic matter. However, in some areas they can be found growing in sandy soils. It is advisable to purchase a soil pH tester or kit to make sure the pH is between 3.5 and 5.0 before planting the pips.

These hardy orchids do best in dappled light as found under a tree. Surprisingly, they can grow in dry to damp soil conditions, though we prefer moist. They do not like heavy clay soil, but prefer a humus type soil. Ladyslipper Orchids can be found in two distinct habitat types: dry, acidic woods, typically on slopes or steep hillsides, and in sphagnum bogs.

The addition of chemical fertilizers is not recommended with Lady Slipper Orchids. They tend to do best in nutrient starved areas.

This is an extremely rare plant and Hirt's is one of the few greenhouses in the country offering this hardy orchid to the public and at such a reasonable price.

Water thoroughly after receiving the plant and place the pot on a diffused light windowsill. Only water when the soil is almost dry, about once every 10 to 14 days. Water thoroughly, but never allow the pot to stand in water. Do not fertilize the orchid! You can then plant the Lady Slipper outside in the spring.
